Bringing The Skills Show to Leeds City Region
Published 4 February 2014
Since Calderdale College (on behalf of the Leeds City Region Skills Network) was awarded the Skills Show Experience contract in September, events have been taking place across the region inspiring visitors through hands on taster of a skill.
Skills Network members, including Selby College, have been involved in the delivery of this project with many incorporating the Have a Go activities with their existing open evenings and taster days.
Robert Tansey, Director of Marketing & Learner Services at Selby College explains: “The Skills Show Experience is a great addition to our open evenings; students are a lot more enthusiastic when they have the opportunity to Have a Go at a taster of a skill.”
The Skills Show Experience is a nationwide programme of over 220 events throughout the year extending the impact of The Skills Show and inspiring over 200,000 young people across the country, unlocking their potential and shaping their future.
The programme, which is supported by the National Careers Service and the European Social Fund, links skills to real opportunities at a local level, aiming to inspire through hands on experience. These events are relevant to local employment and community needs and strengthen collaborations between Local Enterprise Partnerships, employers and education providers.
Creating a highly skilled nation
Speaking about the annual Skills Show which attracts more than 30,000 visitors and has more than 100 exhibitors, Matthew Hancock, Skills Minister said: "The Skills Show is an amazing showcase for the vast variety of skills we have in this country. We need to champion our skills and inspire young people to make their own mark on industries ranging from engineering to web design.
