Since Calderdale College (on behalf of the Leeds City Region Skills Network) was awarded the ‘Have a Go' World Skills contract in September, activities have been taking place across the region attracting more than 3000 potential students.
A total of 12 partners were involved in the Local Have a Go project including all of the colleges from West Yorkshire. Many colleges reported an average of 50 applications on the same day that activities took place.
Bradford College were in the spotlight when they held their Have a Go activities alongside their Match Fit Finals day in March. The event was a huge success with activities been held in five of their main campuses with an estimate of 1000 people through the doors. Visitors were given the opportunity to have a go at various activities including: The Pit Stop Challenge (can you be as fast as a Formula 1 team at changing the tyres on a race car?) and Cartoonify (using the latest IT technology and software to turn yourself into the ultimate superhero).
Leeds City College also hosted a ‘Feel for Steel' activity which gave participants a chance to have a go at welding, wheel balancing and automobile spray painting. Year 11 pupil Matty enjoyed the tasters so much he is going to apply for vehicle mechanics: “I've always wanted to do a trade and now I know I'll enjoy it.”
